Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn anything he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the negative comments from others annihilate his dream of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.

He started competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an eternal passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always aspires to get better.

Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a regular basis.
