Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite advancement in his skills happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge each other. He had access into a number of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
