Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a few hands you will be able to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high, and many trying for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
