Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.

The real improvement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge each other. He had access into a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
