The main basis for why Stu Ungar switched from gin to poker was that Stu was a tiny bit too skilled at it. So good in fact, that no one could stand up to him. Even the commonly called champions who were supposed to be the best at gin rummy were blow away when they faced Stu. One such gin rummy masters was Harry Stein, called, "Yonkie". Harry Stein suffered such a humiliating beating at the hands of Stu Ungar that he apparently quit competing in it professionally and never showed up at a gin tournament.

Accordingly, with a distinction like that it was not long before everyone became afraid of wagering against stu. He could not find any games and in his agony he began doing something no one had attempted before. Stu provided starting handicaps to likely opposing players with the high hopes that they might just compete with him if they thought they held an advantage. He at will started from a bad arrangement and one tale has it that stu even competed against a constant cheater. Mid contest, he received advice that the bad egg was at it yet again but Stu Ungar stated that he knew of the chicanery and he would still win, which of course, he did.

The same trend followed Stu Ungar to vegas. He won so frequently that the casinos started requesting that he not to gamble on their poker rooms anymore. The explanation why was that other casino clientele would not sit at the table if Stu was seated.

Stu Ungar is recalled better for his abilities in hold’em poker but he himself always said that he was far more accomplished at gin rummy.

He defeated Doyle Brunson in the World Series of Poker in Nineteen Eighty to become the youngest world camp. Due to his features that made him seem far younger than he actually was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
