Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved betting on various card games at a young age. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
